Vintage Tutsi Basket - Rwanda - with Cowrie shells - 106.13

A vintage Tutsi basket, hand-woven by the Tutsi people of Rwanda and finished with natural cowrie shells. More than just storage, these are functional works of art, each one carrying the character, slight imperfections and rich patina that only age can bring.

Traditionally hand-coiled from locally sourced sisal, raffia and sweetgrass, dyed with organic pigments to achieve their earthy, muted tones, with cowrie shells worked into the design. The classic zig-zag and diamond motifs are iconic to Rwandan weaving. As a planter, use a waterproof liner, or group several together for a display of varied heights and patterns.
