A hand-carved Kwele Pibibuze 'spirit' mask from Gabon
Hand-carved by the Kwele people of the rainforests of Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, the Pibibuze represents a human spirit. Its heart-shaped face is finished in white kaolin clay — the pigment of the ancestral realm — and framed by a striking dark zigzag border suggesting a stylised crown. Slender, almond-shaped eyes give it the quiet, 'cooling' expression once believed to ease tensions and protect the village, historically danced in the Bwete ceremony.
Professionally mounted on a sleek black metal gallery stand, ready to display on a shelf, console or mantel. Hand-carved from indigenous wood with natural pigments, with the small variations in tone and finish of a genuine handmade piece.
